Police: Plainfield man steals from Menards by stuffing items under shirt

JOLIET – A Plainfield man allegedly tried to walk out of the Menards in Joliet with tools and other merchandise stuffed under his shirt, police said.

About 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Jeffrey A. Council, 47, of the 2800 block of Adobe Drive in Plainfield was arrested on a charge of retail theft in connection with the incident at the 2524 W. Jefferson St. store.

Council reportedly was spotted on video inside the Menards, taking items off shelves and placing them under his shirt, Joliet Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said in an email. The items Council hid inside his shirt were three thermostats, a 10-piece drill bit set and an electronic relay kit, said Gregory, who put the total value of the merchandise at close to $500.

Council then allegedly walked past the last point of payment at Menards but was stopped by the store’s loss prevention officer when he made his exit, Gregory said.

Council was arrested and taken to the Will County jail. He was scheduled to appear in court for a bond hearing Monday afternoon.

In 2016, Council pleaded guilty to possession of marijuana. He was sentenced to one-year court supervision, fined $1,000 and mandated to complete 30 hours of public service.
