On Saturday at the Plainfield South Chess Sectional, the Plano chess team qualified for the IHSA State Tournament, which will take place on Feb. 9-10 in Peoria. The Reaper Chess team was seeded 24th out of 24 in a sectional that included returning state champion IMSA, Neuqua Valley, Naperville North, Naperville Central, Joliet Central, Waubonsie Valley, Plainfield South, Benet Academy, West and East Aurora, Joliet West, Metea Valley, Bolingbrook and Lockport, plus other large schools. PHS was the smallest school in the sectional, by far. The qualifying sectional team included Nick Beltran, Jorge Rizo, Jovanny Penso, Alex Gonzalez, Ryan Lugo, Peter Schmit, Brian Clemen, Mark Zacarias, Caiden Konow and Jacob Gugala.
