New restaurants coming to Glen Ellyn

GLEN ELLYN – Glen Ellyn residents will soon have a few new dining options.

McMae’s on Main plans to open by the end of the year at 411 N. Main St. in downtown Glen Ellyn. The space formerly housed Wooden Barrel Bar & Grill, which closed in spring 2016. Owner Greg McCaffrey also owns McMae’s Tavern & Grill in Bartlett.

During their Oct. 23 meeting, Glen Ellyn trustees voted to give the restaurant a $7,500 downtown retail interior improvement award from the Central Business District Tax Increment Financing Fund. The money will help pay for the installation of a grease interceptor and for gas piping expansion, estimated to cost $17,202.

“In addition to $17,000 in eligible award improvements, he is also investing $12,500 in other plumbing improvements, which are not eligible in the village’s award program,” Glen Ellyn Economic Development Coordinator Meredith Hannah said in a memo. “Other interior improvements are being made throughout the space.”

McCaffrey told trustees he hopes to open the restaurant by December. The casual dining restaurant will serve such fare as sandwiches, burgers and salads, he said.

Trustees also approved a special use permit to allow Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches to renovate the former AK Diamond Gallery jewelry store at the northeast corner of Roosevelt Road and Park Boulevard in to a restaurant with a drive-thru.

Jimmy John’s will relocate from its existing location in the Baker Hill shopping center. Trustees approved the special use permit with several conditions, including that a barrier allowing only a right-in/right-out be installed at the Roosevelt Road access point.

“This site was never originally designed to accommodate a drive-thru,” Glen Ellyn Planning and Development Director Staci Hulseberg told trustees.

In addition to those restaurants, The JOY Bar, a smoothie and juice bar, is set to open soon at 548 Crescent Blvd. in downtown Glen Ellyn in the space formerly occupied by Euro Crepes.
