This is not your ordinary car show in Grundy County. In fact, it is more than just cars; it is a traditional hot rod and custom car show.
The Jalopy Fest, sponsored by D’Arcy-Buick-GMC, is a combination of cars, vendors, a swap meet, pinup contests, and even a flamethrower and chop topped limbo contests. The event will begin at 7 a.m. Friday, Sept. 8, and Saturday, Sept. 9, at Grundy County Speedway.
According to the Jalopy Fest Facebook page, this year it is dedicated to the memory of Dan Obermaier, who is a friend of the Chicagoland Rockabilly Community and a vintage car enthusiast.
“Dan Obermaier was a friend of The Five Aces Motor Club and was involved in the Traditional Hot Rod and Custom car scene,” said Bernie Myers, organizer of the Jalopy Fest. “He had a 1960 Plymouth and was tragically killed in a shop accident while working on his car for last year’s Jalopy Fest.”
Myers and his wife, Marcia, began this fest eight years ago with a group of volunteers and various car clubs.
“This is not like any other traditional car show or cruise night,” Myers said.
Vehicles participating in the event must be 1964 models and older.
“To some, this is more of a lifestyle. Some people even dress the part,” Myers said.
Guests can even lean on a car to get a better view of what’s inside. And if questions are asked to the owners, it’s time to sit down and listen to a story.
Those wishing to participate in the swap meet are required to sell items that go along with the theme and cannot be newer than 1964.
During the two days, the fest is packed with entertainment from eight live bands, contests, and vendors. Kids also can participate in the Little Mr. Greaser and Little Miss Jalopy contest where they can register at the Jalopy Fest booth at the show Saturday morning. Contestants will be asked questions and will be chosen by five judges, and winners will receive vintage bikes. The first 15 participants will receive a goodie bag.
Camping is available during the fest and is at no cost with a two-day wristband admission for everyone camping. Campers will be able to set up Friday morning; early bird campsites are available for an additional $10 a person. Campsites are on a first-come, first-serve basis.
There is no cost to enter the swap meet. Those wishing to participate in the swap meet are required to have automotive or Mid Century merchandise to keep with this year’s theme as well as pay the gate price for each day.
Based on the 1964 theme, the swap meet will consist of vintage records, clothes, automotive parts and furniture. Spectator parking at the event is free, and a gate price is all that is needed.
A flame-throwing contest will take place Saturday night where cars will shoot flames out of the tailpipes.
