Breaking Bread restaurant opens second location in Crystal Lake

CRYSTAL LAKE – Every customer walking into Breaking Bread Catering & Deli’s new location in Crystal Lake during Tuesday’s lunch rush seemed determined to tell owner Teri Plazak the same thing: We’re glad you’re finally here.

Breaking Bread Catering & Deli had a soft opening for its second restaurant Monday in Suite 250 of the Country Corners shopping center at 230 W. Virginia Ave., between Pablo’s and Krystal Thai, in response to high demand from Crystal Lake customers who visited the Cary location.

"With Cary, we deliver [within]
4 miles and just touch Crystal Lake," Plazak said. "We have so many people who were disappointed, and amazingly, many of them drive to pick up from us, so that's what prompted [opening a new location]."

The Crystal Lake City Council passed a motion to award $10,000 in Retailer Job Creation and Investment Grant funds to Breaking Bread Catering & Deli on March 21, according to city documents.

The grant program is one of the city’s economic development efforts.

Plazak, who grew up in town and attended Crystal Lake Central High School, said customers have been asking about bringing a second location to Crystal Lake since she and her husband, Chris, opened the original store in Cary in 2013.

“It was always the idea that once that one got rolling, we would open more (shops),” Teri Plazak said.

Breaking Bread Catering & Deli serves specialty sandwiches, burgers and hot dogs along with some vegetarian choices and gluten-free options for most sandwiches.

Both locations also offer free delivery.

Plazak said she expects to host a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony with the Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce in July.
