Mystery Diner: Rowdys in downtown Yorkville offers plenty of variety, meat

Image 1 of 7

If you are a fan of variety, and a fan of meat, Rowdys in downtown Yorkville is the place to be.

Rowdys moved into the old downtown staple of O.J.'s Tap at 210 S. Bridge St. in 2013 and has been growing nonstop. It has since expanded into the building to the north, with an arcade room and a dining room.

With an expansive menu of dozens of different burger toppings, including a "playbook" of different burgers that changes every quarter, the most difficult thing about dining at Rowdys is deciding which one you're going to order. On top of that, you can substitute the beef patty in any of their burger combinations for a grilled chicken breast, a country-fried chicken breast or a homemade vegan five-grain patty. Decisions, decisions.

In addition to burgers, Rowdys has a plethora of appetizers, including wings, cheese curds, garlic fries, and "stuffed" nachos, and a full selection of sandwiches and salads. They also serve up something called "hog wings," which are cuts of pork shank – a single bone surrounded by delicious pork – that are grilled and topped with your choice of sauce and a side of fresh cut fries.

To start off my Rowdys experience, the Mystery Diner ordered an appetizer called the Southern Skins: potato skins with bacon, pulled pork and cheddar cheese, served with sour cream. These are not your regular old potato skins, although the Mystery Diner loves those as well. These came with plentiful ingredients and were barbecue, bacon-y, cheesy goodness on a generously sized tater. I was punched in the face by flavor.

At Rowdys, the burgers are the true star and you can tell how much love they put into their burgers. The flavor is outstanding and they are cooked perfectly to order.

At first the Mystery Diner was flustered with the variety of options, but he settled on the So Gouda burger. Rowdys has a selection of burgers called their "Signature Fried Cheese" burgers that feature a generous thick slice of cheese deep-fried and placed onto one of their half-pound burgers.

The So Gouda comes with a slice of gouda cheese and your choice of toppings. The mixture of the melted gouda and the fresh burger are heavenly. And all topped with a soft Kaiser roll that really makes the burger an experience.

There are so many burgers to choose from at Rowdys – the "Leggo My Burger," topped with a fried chicken breast with two waffles as buns, the "Popeye" with homemade spinach artichoke dip and Monterey jack cheese, the "Shawnssee" with corned beef, sauerkraut, Thousand Island dressing and Swiss cheese. But you'll come out a winner no matter what you choose.

Rowdys is a big, beefy jewel in downtown Yorkville, and if you have a hearty appetite and you love variety, give it a visit. You won't be disappointed.
