SPRING GROVE – The McHenry County Coroner has identified a Spring Grove man killed in Friday night's house fire.
Erik K. Whalen-Pedersen, age 61, of Spring Grove, showed signs of smoke and soot inhalation at the autopsy Saturday. Carbon monoxide levels and other tests are pending, the coroner said.
The Spring Grove Fire Department was called to the scene of a house fire at the 9800 block of Hunters Lane in Spring Grove about 5:45 p.m. Friday after a passerby reported flames and smoke, Spring Grove Fire Chief Rich Tobiasz said.
When the department arrived on the scene, there was heavy smoke and fire inside, and firefighters found the victim on the first floor. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Illinois State Fire Marshall, Tobiasz said.
No firefighters were injured. The fire caused about $150,000 worth of damage, the fire chief said.
Fire departments from Richmond; Hebron; Wonder Lake; McHenry; Fox Lake; Antioch; Grayslake; Round Lake; Twin Lake, Wisconsin; Randall, Wisconsin; and Salem, Wisconsin, assisted at the scene.
