SHOREWOOD – Three people at a Shorewood grocery store were injured Thursday evening when a confrontation over stolen liquor led one shoplifting suspect to draw a knife.
The incident occurred at the Jewel-Osco near the intersection of Route 52 and Route 59, when store personnel tried to detain a couple attempting to steal high-end liquor, according to Shorewood Deputy Chief Jason Barten.
As a security guard and two other employees tried to stop the pair, David L. Knight, 46, became combative and a physical altercation ensued, Barten said. The incident ended with Knight brandishing a large knife and cutting three people, according to Barten.
Police, who had been called earlier about the theft, arrived around the same time Knight drew his weapon, Barten said. Officers then quickly took Knight, and Stephany L. Igram, 31, into custody.
None of the injuries sustained by the victims were life-threatening, but one person was transported to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.
Barten described the knife as “almost like a small dagger,” with an 8- to 10-inch blade.
He said that before Thursday's incident, Knight had already been under investigation for several liquor thefts from the Shorewood Jewel-Osco.
Knight, of the 400 block of Sherman Street in Joliet, was charged with aggravated battery, theft, retail theft, drug possession and possession or use of a firearm, according to Will County court records.
Ingram, of the 400 block of Hickory Street in Joliet, was charged with theft, retail theft, obstructing justice and obstructing identification, court records stated. Barten said Ingram initially gave false identifying information to police.
Both Knight and Ingram were booked into the Will County jail.
