GENEVA – Food choices for the third Geneva Restaurant Week come in a dizzying variety – from crispy artichokes at The Grandstander to fried pickles at Geneva Ale House to poached lobster at Nobel House.
The Geneva Chamber of Commerce event has 18 participating restaurants, which will offer discount specials for either $19 or $39 as price points from Jan. 23 through Jan. 29, Chamber spokeswoman Laura Rush said.
Previously, the event featured lunch and dinner options, but with the addition this year of breakfast and lunch-only eateries, they are participating with breakfast and lunch specials, Rush said.
“Some are per person, some are for two, and some are options you will only find during Geneva Restaurant Week,” Rush said.
Tickets and passes are not necessary. Participants can just show up at any participating location or call ahead for a reservation, she said.
Among those participating for the first time this year is Buttermilk, 7 W. State St., Geneva, featuring its Stuffed Breakfast Biscuit.
“It’s one of our signature items,” co-owner Pete Kostopoulos said. “Every component is homemade. We take the biscuit and our own sausage gravy and entwine it into a ball and bake it. Then we top it off with more sausage gravy and a blend of cheeses and smoked bacon bits.”
And that’s not all – the entree comes with Buttermilk’s special farmhouse potatoes, which include country ham, bacon, scallions, red peppers and onions with havarti cheese melted on top, Kostopoulos said.
Buttermilk also will offer its Alabama Hot Chicken Benny, which is a biscuit laced with bacon and topped with two boneless, skinless chicken thighs that were fried and glazed in the restaurant’s own pepper jelly barbecue sauce, Kostopoulos said.
“Then it’s topped off with two fried eggs, sharp white cheddar, a sweet and spicy pickle and drizzled with a white Alabama barbecue sauce,” Kostopoulos said.
Katie Kouvelis, the wife of his partner, Spiro Kouvelis, developed the specialty dishes, Kostopoulos said.
Buttermilk opened in spring 2015, so this is the restaurant’s first foray into Geneva Restaurant Week. Kostopoulos said he was encouraged by other restaurant owners who said participating was a great way to introduce an eatery to new diners.
“We feel that Geneva has really shined in the dinner scene,” Kostopoulos said. “Instead of driving all the way downtown to Chicago, Geneva has become a good restaurant spot.”
Another new participant this year is Deane’s Deli & Market, 500 S. Third St., Geneva, whose owner Chris Deane agreed restaurant week would be a good way to bring newcomers to their restaurant. Deane’s Deli opened in the summer of 2016.
“We’ve had good reviews, but it still takes a while to build that awareness,” Deane said. “This is an opportunity with the winter doldrums setting in. This gives people a reason to get out and try us for the first time, or to get out of the house in the cold months to have a great meal.”
One of the restaurant week specials is lunch or dinner for two: two half-sandwiches with two cups of soup and a brownie or chocolate chip cookies to share and two fountain drinks.
Deane’s Deli has a core menu of sandwiches, a choice of two soups, and different specials every day, Deane said.
“We have a meatball sandwich as our hot sandwich on Wednesday,” Deane said. “On Thursday, it’s the hot pastrami sandwich – and we make the pastrami in house. We have black bean soup every day and a second soup every day. On Monday, the second soup is beer and cheddar cheese soup. Tuesday’s is southwest cream of chicken soup, where we smoke the chicken here and pull it off the bone.”
The black bean soup is both vegan and gluten-free, as is the roasted red pepper bisque offered on Thursdays, Deane said.
