CARY – After it became clear there was not enough support among trustees to approve an electronic billboard, the Committee of the Whole on Tuesday approved a revised plan from Liberty Outdoor Advertising to replace the billboards at 65 Northwest Highway with new print signs.
The new billboards would have a faux stone base with a monument style appearance instead of a pole design. The 72-square-foot signs will replace the existing billboards, which have been in place for more than 30 years.
The old billboards had been scheduled for removal in June 2015, but the Village Board granted a one-year extension to discuss the future of the signs.
The Committee of the Whole discussed a proposal for electronic signs in January, with several trustees taking issue with proposed stipulations.
In April, Village Administrator Chris Clark told the board there was no consensus on proceeding with the electronic boards, and Liberty subsequently proposed simply replacing the print signs.
Bryan Javor of Liberty Outdoor Advertising said the process had been educational and he felt the proposed signs would fit the spirit of the community.
“I didn’t understand the process of conditional use,” Javor said. “Now that I do, I hope next time we have to do something like this i have a smoother transition in giving what you need the first time.”
A vote for official approval of the signs will take place at the July 5 Village Board meeting.
