High school softball: McHenry's Martens, Huntley's Shields and Marengo's Dionne named first-team all-state by ICA

Huntley senior Jessica Shields and McHenry senior Alex Martens were named to the Class 4A Illinois Coaches Association All-State Softball first team, released Monday at icasoftball.org.

Shields, who hit .536 with 42 runs scored, five doubles, three triples and 67 steals in 71 attempts, helped lead the Red Raiders to their second consecutive regional title, first Fox Valley Conference Valley Division crown and a school-record 26 wins.

She had a .613 on-base percentage atop Huntley’s lineup and hit .727 with runners in scoring position. Shields will play college softball at NCAA Division II Wisconsin-Parkside.

Martens, the 2016 Northwest Herald Softball Player of the Year, was named to the first team for the second straight year. She paced the Warriors in batting average (.598), on-base percentage (.655) and slugging percentage (1.021), striking out only once in 113 plate appearances.

The shortstop smacked 16 doubles, two triples and seven homers with 42 runs scored and 40 RBIs. Martens committed to Kentucky as a sophomore.

Huntley senior second baseman Hayley O’Mara was named to the second team after earning third-team honors as a junior. O’Mara, who will play at Davenport University in Michigan, hit .425 with 21 extra-base hits, including 13 doubles and eight home runs, and drove in 40 runs.

Huntley sophomore Tiffany Giese was named to the third team after pitching in 33 of 35 games for the Raiders. Giese finished 25-7 in the circle with nine shutouts, a 2.34 ERA and 197 strikeouts in 2181/3 innings.

In Class 3A, Marengo pitcher Mariah Dionne earned first-team honors for the second straight year. Dionne, a junior, went 20-7 with a 2.45 ERA and 208 strikeouts in 166 innings. Marengo advanced to a Class 3A Genoa-Kingston Sectional final, losing to Sterling, 2-1.

Dionne allowed only two earned runs in three postseason starts. At the plate, she hit .483 with 19 doubles, one triple, eight home runs and 46 RBIs, as the Indians went undefeated in the Big Northern Conference East Division for the third straight year.

Dionne was also named BNC East Pitcher of the Year for the third consecutive season.

Marengo junior Leah Secor was named to the second team. The shortstop hit .424 with 50 runs scored, adding 11 doubles and two homers as the Indians’ leadoff hitter. Secor did not strike out all season and committed only two errors on defense.

Joining Secor on the second team is Hampshire junior Peyton DeChant (Loyola), who hit .500 with six home runs and 32 RBIs. The Whip-Purs won their first regional title since 2008 behind a 4-for-4 performance from DeChant in a Class 3A Hampshire Regional final win over Johnsburg.

Marengo’s Allison Jasinski and Anna Walsweer, Hampshire’s Aly Snider, Johnsburg’s Morgan Post, and Richmond-Burton’s Ashley Turner and Haylie Regnier were named to the third team.
