Wauconda man charged with marijuana DUI after Volo crash that killed Lake Zurich pedestrian

22-year-old Lake Zurich woman was hit, killed in Route 12 crash

VOLO – A 23-year-old Wauconda man is accused of driving under the influence of marijuana in connection with the May 5 death of a woman who was walking across Route 12, police announced Friday.

Brandon A. Stang, of the 400 block of North Main Street, has been charged with aggravated driving under the influence of cannabis – causing death, a Class 2 felony, according to a news release from Lake County Sheriff's Detective Christopher Covelli.

Stang was driving a 2008 Ford Mustang south on Route 12 south of Route 120 about 2:40 a.m. May 5 when police said he struck 22-year-old Stephanie V. Kostenko of Lake Zurich. Deputies arrived and found Kostenko lying dead in the road, police have said.

Police on Thursday obtained a warrant for Stang's arrest after they said they determined he was driving under the influence of marijuana at the time of the crash.

Stang surrendered himself into the custody of the Lake County Sheriff's Office on Friday, police said.

Police said Stang is being held in Lake County Jail on $100,000 bail.

If convicted, he could face seven years in prison.
