The Beer Cellar plans to expand, move to new downtown Glen Ellyn location

Move would add bar area for patrons

GLEN ELLYN – The Beer Cellar plans to expand and relocate its downtown business.

Owner David Hawley has plans to move The Beer Cellar, currently located at 534 Crescent Blvd. in downtown Glen Ellyn, to a vacant space at 488 Crescent Blvd. Plans are to expand The Beer Cellar's inventory and services.

"The new location provides an opportunity for The Beer Cellar to expand their offerings of packaged craft beer and provide a bar area for patrons to enjoy a freshly poured craft beer," Glen Ellyn Economic Development Coordinator Meredith Hannah said in a memo to the Glen Ellyn Village Board. "The focus will still be craft beer and he will offer a small menu, similar to a late night restaurant menu, and allow food from other downtown food establishments to be brought in."

The Beer Cellar opened in November 2013. To accommodate the proposal, village trustees will have to create a new type of liquor classification.

As proposed, the new liquor classification would allow for the sale of craft beer for both consumption off site and on site by those at least 21 years old. As part of the new rules, on-site consumption allowed in the serving area will be in containers no larger than 16 ounces.

In addition, staff must be trained and certified to serve alcohol, and no craft brew will be brewed or manufactured on site.
