WHEATON – The Wheaton Fire Department recently accepted six new pet oxygen mask kits, donated by the Invisible Fence Brand's Project Breathe program, according to a news release from the business.
The donation is a part of the brand's Project Breathe program, which aims to equip every fire station in the U.S. and Canada with the masks, allowing firefighters and first responders to give oxygen to pets who are suffering from smoke inhalation.
In total, the brand has donated more than 12,400 pet oxygen masks to fire stations across the country and Canada, and saved more than 150 pets.
"When a family suffers the tragedy of a fire, lives are turned upside down," Invisible Fence Brand Director Ed Hoyt said in the release. "Pets are valued family members, so we want families to know that their pet can be cared for if tragedy strikes. ... We realize that humans are the first-priority, but in many cases, pets can be saved if firefighters have the right equipment."
