Kaneland High School hosts annual talent show

Trevor Cannon wanted to show his classmates that he could sing and play the piano.

The Kaneland sophomore was a bit nervous when he started to perform a cover of Justin Bieber’s “Purpose" during the Kaneland High School talent show April 29, but it didn’t take long for that nervousness to subside and for his talent to take over.

Cannon was one of about 20 acts that were featured during the talent show at the high school in Maple Park.

“It was a fun night with a variety of entertainment,” Cannon said. “I had never done something like this before, but I wanted to show them that I had talents that they didn’t know about. It went smoothly. I was nervous at first, but then when I was done, it was like, ‘Oh my gosh,’ because they were all clapping and cheering pretty loudly.”

The talent show offered an opportunity for Kaneland High School students to show off some of their talents.

Senior Dean Divizio’s band Remember the Future was one of the groups that performed. The band, which featured nearly a dozen players during the talent show, rattled off its interpretation of “Haitian Fight Song” by Charles Mingus.

“I think the audience really dug it, “ Divizio said. “I talked to a few people afterward who said they were really into it, which was nice to hear.”

Remember the Future isn’t a one-time deal, either. While the band was able to use the setting on Friday to showcase its talent, the band has performed at previous Kaneland events and will take the stage at 7 p.m. May 6 at the House Café in DeKalb.

Sophomore Gunnar Magnuson pulled double duty, playing with Remember the Future as well as the smaller outfit Equinox.

“It was kind of a strange night because we didn’t know if we were going to do a talent show or not, since the original date in March was canceled,” he said. “I was glad we were able to do it, though. It was a lot of fun.”

Magnuson showed off his saxophone talent, ripping a solo during his rendition of Gerry Rafferty’s late '70s classic, “Baker Street,” while junior Sabrina Massa took over lead vocals for the band’s cover of Elle King’s “Ex’s & Oh’s.”

Approximately 250 people attended the show, which provided just a glimpse of the amount of talent that walks through the halls of Kaneland High School.

“It was a true collaboration of the students’ talents, and students supported each other, whether it be through moving equipment or helping each other’s performances,” Kaneland teacher and show sponsor Judy Fabrizius said. “It is a great opportunity for the community to see how Kaneland truly is a school full of talent.”
