WESTMONT – During the past year, Manning Elementary School in Westmont has established a partnership with the DuPage Humane Society’s Paws for Tales Reading Program and St. John’s Lutheran Church of La Grange to bring in two sets of dog teams to work with students in all grade levels.
The human-animal bond is powerful. Interaction with these dogs with their unconditional friendship and limitless patience is an experience that has lasting impact on the students, the news release said.
Garrett, a 7-year-old golden retriever, and his owner, Mary Onorad, visit Manning Elementary once a week. Students get his tail wagging as they read aloud tales. The goal is to create a positive, nonthreatening environment where reading aloud is enjoyed.
On Friday mornings, Angel, a 2-year-old golden retriever accompanied by owner Mark Stapleton, can be found listening to students share stories and experiences. Angel helps students become comfortable with animals.
The volunteer dogs and their human companions live in Westmont.
In the spring, Manning will partner with Miller Elementary School to host a pet service and animal awareness and fundraising week.
All proceeds will go to the DuPage Humane Society.
