PetSmart closes location in Algonquin Commons

ALGONQUIN – A long-standing tenant of the Algonquin Commons shopping center, pet supply retailer PetSmart, recently closed up shop after a final closeout sale.

The storefront at 1808 S. Randall Road in Algonquin on Wednesday was stripped of PetSmart's signature red-and-blue sign. Another sign at the front entrance informed customers of the store closing and referred them to PetSmart locations in Crystal Lake and McHenry.

A spokesperson with the Phoenix-based retail chain said the company doesn’t comment on local store closures, citing a corporate policy. PetSmart operates more than 1,400 stores nationwide, offering pet owners and their furry companions a variety of pet supplies, food products, grooming and boarding services.

The PetSmart location opened in Algonquin by early 2006 as one of the earlier tenants to the Algonquin Commons, after the largest outdoor shopping center in the village started in fall 2004.

OfficeMax, which neighbored PetSmart at 1806 S. Randall Road, also closed earlier this year after years of operation. A nearby Office Depot about 2 miles north of the Algonquin Commons remains open.

Other retailers have shown interest in the Algonquin shopping center. Michigan-based Art Van Furniture plans to open at the Algonquin Commons in the spring, taking the spot of Gordmans after the department store closed in the fall.
