DOWNERS GROVE – The Downers Grove Village Council approved amendments to the village's parking restriction ordinance during its Nov. 17 meeting that will prohibit street parking in some areas and define parking hours in others.
The amendments highlighted four areas:
• Parking on the east side of Washington Street, south of 63rd Street will be prohibited for about 200 feet. The restriction has already been in place temporarily because parking on both sides of the street cut traffic to one lane.
• Parking spaces on the East-West Access Drive designated as “No Parking - Loading Zone” will be changed to prohibit parking from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. in order to create more parking in the downtown area.
• The parking restriction on Belle Aire Lane, north of Ogden Avenue will be extended north, past Janet Street. The area will have no parking from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday to ease traffic during school hours at Belle Aire Elementary School.
• Both sides of Highland Avenue in front of Highland Elementary School will have no parking from 8 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 4 p.m., also for school safety.
Also during the meeting, the council heard a request to rezone the property at 2501 Hobson Road in order to expand the existing cemetery.
The property includes a single-family residence that will be demolished to build a crypt.
Nearby residents said at a Plan Commission meeting that they are concerned that the crypt may be visible from their properties.
Petitioners representing the Archdiocese of Joliet, which owns the property, said that the crypt will be located as far away from the neighbors to the east as it can within the layout of the current cemetery.
The architect for the crypt also said he will look for ways to make the building shorter, with it currently designed to be 28.4 feet tall.
The council is expect to vote on the proposal during its Dec. 1 meeting.
