Fox River Grove makes design decisions for new public works facility

FOX RIVER GROVE – At this point, the new Fox River Grove Public Works facility will be clad in brick with a residential feel.

The Village Board met Tuesday for a special meeting, during which the contracted architect, Batavia-based Kluber Architects and Engineers, went over some of the design aspects of the planned 11,000-square-foot building.

There was a general consensus, Village Administrator Derek Soderholm said, that an all-brick building would be more cost-effective long term because it requires less regular maintenance.

“They thought asphalt shingles were a go [for the roof],” he added.

Soderholm said Kluber gave the presentation with Elgin-based construction company Lamp Inc.

“The goals are to provide an elegant building that has residential qualities for it to fit into the surrounding neighborhood,” Kluber’s Chris Hansen said, adding the board seemed to agree on a dark brown brick at the base and a lighter, copper-colored brick on the upper portion.

A number of other miscellaneous items were discussed, such as window types, sod versus seed, and the costs associated with such decisions.

Expected to cost between $2.7 million and $2.9 million, the facility will be at Hillcrest and Lincoln avenues, across from the existing wastewater treatment plant, Soderholm said.

The Village Board decided on a site plan in July. It included an entrance vestibule, administration section, staff work space and a conference room area, among other elements. It also, unlike the other choices, had four pull-through apparatus bays meant to give public works vehicles easy in-and-out access.

Soderholm said a public meeting inviting residents to see design layouts and learn more about the facility will be scheduled soon.
