BERWYN – Police are saying the July 18 early-morning shooting death of a 25-year-old Chicago man with gang affiliations may not to be gang-related.
About 2:10 a.m. July 18, police responded to numerous calls of shots fired in the area of 19th Street and Gunderson Avenue, according to a Berwyn Police Department news release.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man lying on the ground with gunshot wounds.
The man, later identified as Daniel Ortiz, 25, of the 4800 block of South Tripp Avenue, Chicago, was unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene despite efforts by Berwyn paramedics, according to police.
Police originally reported Ortiz lived in the 1800 block of Gunderson Avenue in Berwyn, but further investigation determined that Ortiz lived in Chicago.
The Berwyn Police Department, the WESTAF Major Crimes Task Force and the Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System secured the area, processed the crime scene and canvassed the area for information related to the crime, the release stated.
The Berwyn Police Department Criminal Investigation Unit is actively conducting interviews and reviewing video surveillance records and any potential evidence recovered in order to identify anyone involved with the shooting, which was ruled a homicide, according to the release.
No suspects were identified and the motive for the shooting is unknown, police said.
Ortiz had an extensive criminal record and was known to have gang affiliations, according to Police Chief Jim Ritz. Ritz added investigators do not believe the killing was gang-related.
Police said there are no suspects at this point or a motive for the murder.
