The second annual Haney Hustle 5K Walk/Run will honor the memory of Karen Haney, a longtime resident of Downers Grove who served as a nurse and assistant clinical manager in the emergency department at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital for over 25 years.
"Because Karen was such a mentor, we wanted to honor her memory," said organizers of the fundraising event taking place Sunday, May 31.
Registration begins at 9 a.m., and the walk at 9:30 a.m. in McCollum Park, 6801 Main St., Downers Grove.
Proceeds will support the "Karen Haney Emergency Department Memorial Recognition Award," developed to promote continual learning opportunities for members of the department, and to encourage her vision of excellence in emergency patient care.
Event organizers said Mrs. Haney, who died at age 53 in 2013, had followed in the footsteps of her mother by pursuing a nursing career.
In announcing the fundraiser, they note she began working the night shift in 1987, at the Downers Grove hospital, adding, "Karen's dedication to emergency nursing was evident every shift she worked. Karen shared her passion of excellence with many of the emergency department staff she mentored over the years. We miss her dearly."
The Haney Hustle 5K Walk/Run is open to all ages, and the registration fee is $30 for adults, and $10 for kids younger than 16, which includes a T-shirt. Water and light refreshments will be provided. The event is not timed.
One may register the day of the event, or by contacting Debbie O'Dell at 630-275-1471 or debra.odell@advocatehealth.com.
