PALATINE – Prairie Ridge already wrapped up most of what it wanted on the first day of the IHSA Girls Gymnastics State Meet.
Senior Rachael Underwood took the all-around state championship as expected, and the Wolves’ had an insurmountable lead for the team title.
The last bit of business for Saturday’s individual events finals, in which team scores can increase with better performances, was hitting 150 points.
Behind Underwood’s and Maddie Solka’s tie for state titles on uneven bars, then Underwood’s and Jada Berkland’s floor exercise routines, the Wolves landed on exactly 150 points. Geneva was second at 147.3.
“After Rachael went, we were saying, ‘We’re a quarter of a tenth behind, we want that 150,’ ” Berkland said. “I just needed to hit my routine the way I had been.”
Berkland scored 9.4 in Friday’s preliminaries and hit 9.425 in the finals.
“To top it off with a 150 was really icing on the cake,” Wolves coach Lee Battaglia said. “I knew it was going to happen because everything was going our way.”
Prairie Ridge, a co-op team which has athletes from Prairie Ridge, Cary-Grove and Crystal Lake Central, is the first team since Fremd in 2008 to win the team title and have the all-around champion. Fremd’s Mary Burke won the all-around title that year.
Underwood and Solka each scored 9.7s, along with Lyons’ Kelsy Kurfirst, for a three-way tie on the uneven bars. Underwood came back to tie for fifth in floor exercise for her 10th individual state medal of her career. She likely would have won the balance beam too, but she fell on her flip-flop layout, which meant a five-tenths deduction.
“I always think ‘if this and if that,’ but it happened,” Underwood said. “I can deal with it. I would rather it happened today than last night. I did my job last night and came in thinking, ‘Just have fun.’ It’s so amazing to come out after four years and get [the team title].”
Solka surpassed her expectations on the bars with the tie for first.
“I was hoping to maybe get third,” she said. “It’s really special to share it with Rachael and Kelsy, they’re both amazing. It’s great, it was a good experience.”
Underwood (.125), Solka (.2) and Nikki Baars (.2) combined in bars to raise the Wolves’ team score by .525. Underwood then added .1 before Berkland’s .025 made it 150.
Prairie Ridge had been team runner-up in the two previous years and managed its first state championship while fighting through injuries. Riley Mahoney, who will compete at NCAA Division I Illinois-Chicago next year, suffered a knee injury in January. Dylann Perrone also injured a knee in the sectional meet and Solka, nursing strained back muscles, was a late substitute in floor exercise just to get the Wolves through as a team.
“They were a little tired [Saturday], but they gave it all last night,” Battaglia said. “The energy level they gave me yesterday was unbelievable. How these kids did this was so special, with all the adversity we put up with.”
