DOWNERS GROVE – Hillcrest Elementary School was the receiver of an unwanted gift Christmas Eve when two Molotov cocktails caused a small fire at the school.
The fire occurred sometime between 9:30 and 9:45 p.m. Wednesday, according to police. The Downers Grove Fire Department was first on scene and extinguished the fire with a few buckets of water before contacting the police department due to signs the blaze was intentionally set, according to police.
An odor of gasoline, a 750 ml Amsterdam Vodka bottle, a 16-ounce Pure pineapple orange juice bottle and a men's white tank top apparently used to stuff the neck of both bottles were found at the scene, officials said.
A witness who saw flames from behind Hillcrest Elementary School called police. No damage to the school, located at 1435 Jefferson Ave., was reported, police said.
