Elmhurst resident, Lombard race chairwoman receives Susan G. Komen award

ELMHURST – Joan Knippen of Elmhurst recently received the Susan G. Komen Chicagoland Area Promise of One award.

The award was given at the 2014 Komen Chicago Impact Awards Luncheon, honoring grantees and volunteers of Komen Chicago. The honor, which requires approval by both the Komen Chicago Board of Directors and Susan G. Komen’s National Headquarters, is granted to an outstanding volunteer, in recognition of exceptional contributions to the organization and the fight against breast cancer, according to a Komen news release.

Knippen first pulled together a team for Race for the Cure seven years ago after hearing an ad on the radio. Since then, Knippen has moved from race participant to serving on the Race Committees for the past five years. She is serving as both the education/mission chairwoman for the Chicago Race for the Cure, as well as the race chairwoman for the Lombard Race for the Cure, the release said.

In particular, Joan is focused on promoting awareness and education about breast health, early detection and breast cancer treatment, according to the release.

The Lombard Race for the Cure will be Sept. 21 at the Yorktown Center.
