Argument ends in shooting, one dead in Cicero

CICERO – A 24-year-old Elgin man was shot to death by a Cicero man when a verbal argument turned into a fatal confrontation in the 5700 block of West 25th Street at 6:20 a.m. Saturday.

Police said Reynaldo Diaz, 56, of the 2500 block of 58th Court, and Augustin Vera, of Elgin, were engaged in an argument on the street when Diaz went home and brought back a 9mm pistol and shot Vera once in the chest, killing him.

Police said the incident did not appear to be gang related.

"There was just a verbal altercation in the street," Police Superintendent Bernard Harrison said, but would not comment on what the argument was over.

According to police, Diaz gave a statement after he was taken into custody by investigators after he was found riding in his car later on Saturday. Diaz was charged with two counts of first degree murder for the shooting of Vera.

The gun used in the murder was recovered later that day in Chicago, police said.
