MORRIS – The STARS National Midgets presented by D’Arcy GMC return to Grundy County Speedway on Saturday night for a twinbill that features two 36-lap features in the 10th annual Don Carter Sr./Jim Anderson Classic.
Because of Saturday night’s washout, the STARS National Midgets, INEX Legends and Classic Modifieds will run double features. The CSR Mini Cups and the Allison Legacy Series also are part of the agenda. Each will run a 20-lap feature.
The STARS National Midget race honors two Illinois auto racing legends that made their mark in midget racing: Carter as a racing official/push truck driver and Anderson as a car owner. In fact, Anderson’s son, Jimmy, the three-time consecutive STARS National Midget champion, will be competing in the event in the familiar red, white, and blue No. 36.
Anderson, who has never won the event, has finished second in five of the nine editions of the Carter/Anderson Classic. Though Anderson has won many races and championships during his 18 seasons as a midget racer, this event has a deeper, special meaning to him.
“This race is obviously very personal to me,” Anderson said. “Having finished second a number of times, we're always looking to improve our finishing position. No matter what happens on the track, I'm just looking to have a good time with family and friends and pay tribute to my dad who was involved in midget racing in this [Joliet] area since the mid-1960s.”
The drivers and cars from the rained-out event already have their starting spots in the first feature set based on the qualifying results from last week. In Saturday’s qualifying, Avon, Indiana driver Austin Prock set quick time with a lap of 14.332 seconds.
The gates will open at 5 p.m. Saturday. Qualifying begins at 5:30. Racing starts at 6:15 with last week’s features being run first.
Adult general admission is $12. Children ages 5 to 12 get in for $2, while kids age 4 years and younger are free.
