Schwerbrock opens Sheffield Veterinary Clinic

SHEFFIELD — Thomas J. Schwerbrock decided to open a veterinary clinic in Sheffield because of the need for vet services in the area and the friendliness of residents when he went out to eat with his family at local restaurants.

Schwerbrock and his wife, Karen, a veterinary technician, opened Sheffield Veterinary Clinic the first of March at 132 S. Main St. It is open Thursdays from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon.

He has operated Pin Oak Veterinary Clinic southeast of Kewanee for many years and decided to open a clinic in Sheffield because he saw there was a lot of activity in town.

“My kid’s favorite restaurant is ZBest,” he said. “We saw there was no vet in the area and surrounding communities like Neponset, Buda, Wyanet and Manlius. There was a hole in vet service.

“It has worked out well. The community is very friendly. We have people who are out walking their pets and stop in to see us. They will make an appointment then instead of calling us. We only see dogs and cats here. We will treat horses at our other clinic.”

Small animals like cats and dogs are seen by the Schwerbrocks at their Sheffield clinic. No boarding of pets or grooming services are offered at the Sheffield office.

“We do minor surgeries here with our portable x-ray and digital ultrasound machines,” he added. “We have vaccinations here, diagnostic and offer medication as well. We are a one-stop shop.”

The phone number for the Sheffield Veterinary Clinic is 815-213-1343. The clinic also has a Facebook page.

Karen graduated from Purdue Veterinary Tech in 1988 while Schwerbrock graduated from the University of Illinois Veterinary School in 1982 and started Pin Oak in 1992.

After graduation, Schwerbrock worked as an independent contractor at Quad City Downs and was a partner for a brief time at the Kewanee Veterinary Clinic before opening Pin Oak, which is located on the same property as the Schwerbrocks’ home.
