Marconi's Ristorante says farewell to La Grange

LA GRANGE – After 17 years of satisfying grumbling stomachs with classic Italian recipes, Marconi's Ristorante will be serving up its final dishes in June.

The mom and pop restaurant, located at 15 Calendar Avenue, will close its doors as of June 28.

Judy Marconi – who owns the restaurant with her husband John – said they've decided to leave the business and retire to spend more time with their grandchildren.

"We're going to miss everyone we've worked with," Judy Marconi said. "But it's time for us to start a new chapter in our lives and enjoy the rest of life."

Marconi's Ristorante originally opened in 1959 in Chicago and was run by John Marconi's parents. When they retired, John and Judy moved the restaurant to La Grange, opening the new location in March 1996.

Judy Marconi said they had hoped to create a neighborhood feel in the restaurant – something she thinks they've been very successful in doing.

"It's a bittersweet moment for us," Judy said. "We are very grateful to our customers for allowing us to be open for 17 years."

The couple said they have sold the space to another new restaurant, which will keep the current staff, according to Judy. She said it was a big comfort knowing her workers would still have jobs.

With just about a month left before it closes, the couple hasn't planned any farewell celebrations or retirement parties, according to Judy.

"We're just hoping to see some more customers one more time," Judy said. "They've become like family to us."
