WOODRIDGE – With vintage plane models hanging from the ceiling, first class airline seats in the waiting area and employees dressed in pilot shirts, Hangar Clippers is not the average barber shop.
Located at 1001 W. 75th St. in Woodridge, the business offers a fun and relaxing atmosphere, as well as the ability for customers to learn about aviation while getting a haircut, according to owner Terra Tshulos.
“It’s great for kids to learn about things outside of school,” Tshulos said. “The boys who have come in have wide eyes looking at everything.”
While most hair salons cater to women, Hangar Clippers, which opened Jan. 10, provides boys and men with another option, Tshulos said.
“[Opening] the shop was something that I’ve been wanting to do, and I decided to do men and boys, since it’s something different,” Tshulos said.
She also said starting the business will set a positive example for her three kids.
Tshulos said she chose to open up shop in Woodridge because it’s a convenient walk-in location for customers.
“I like when communities are involved in the area,” she said. “ ... Woodridge gives it a hometown feel.”
Hanger Clippers’ first week in business was a success, according to Tshulos. She said since opening, the shop has been giving free haircuts to first time patrons.
“It’s been really good [and]fun,” she said.
When young customers come for haircuts, the shop gives them model planes to build and pilot wings, according to Tshulos. When it’s time to trim, they climb aboard a flying airplane chair.
“They can learn and have fun,” Tshulos said. “It helps calm them down and keep their interest in something.”
Tshulos is looking forward to the barber shop’s future in Woodridge, despite the economic uncertainties of owning a business. The key is to remain optimistic and be flexible, she said.
“My goal is just to keep good employees and keep them and the customers happy,” she said. “I’m positive [the economy] will pick up ... and you can always use a haircut.”
