Get to know Glenbard West's new principal

GLEN ELLYN – After spending 18 years at Glenbard West High School, Peter Monaghan can now call himself principal.

“I’m very, very excited to be in this position, to be a part of this vibrant learning community,” Monaghan said.

During his time at the school, he has served as dean and assistant principal for student services.

Although Glenbard West has a diverse population, students come together in their attitudes toward the school, which has a long and proud history in Glen Ellyn, Monaghan said.

“It’s hard for me to imagine going anywhere else,” he said.

Much of Monaghan’s focus as the school year begins will be on maintaining and growing the school’s areas of excellence by providing additional support and opportunities for students.

He wants to continue to increase the number of Advanced Placement tests students take, as well as make sure there are extracurricular activities that interest everyone.

Changes for the upcoming year include a lengthened lunch period to provide additional time for student academic assistance and an increased use of technology, as students will be encouraged to bring their own devices into the classroom.

“I’ll work to create the best environment for students, do what’s best for students,” Monaghan said.
