SWANSEA (AP) — Authorities say a carnival truck driver whose convoy was stopped on a southwestern Illinois highway was killed when an Illinois State Police sport utility vehicle struck him.
St. Clair County Coroner Rick Stone says 46-year-old James Gaskill of Monmouth died at the scene of the accident early Tuesday on Illinois 159 near Swansea.
Stone says Gaskill was the lead driver of carnival trucks stopped on the road when he was hit by the state trooper transporting a prisoner.
State police spokeswoman Monique Bond says the trooper didn't see Gaskill.
Stone says it's unclear why the carnival trucks were stopped and illegally parked in a traffic lane. Stone says a coroner's jury would be convened to determine what happened.
The trooper's name wasn't released.
