John Carbonaro, a former guidance counselor and softball coach at Naperville North High School, pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges he had a sexual relationship with a former player and student he advised, according to media reports.
Carbonaro, 35, of Warrenville accepted a plea deal to the charges just as his trial was scheduled to start. When sentencing takes place Feb. 19, Carbonaro is expected to be sentenced to 30 days of jail work release, one month of work detail at the DuPage County Sheriff's Office, 30 months of probation and he must register as sex offender for 10 years.
Carbonaro could have served seven years if he had been convicted of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and sentenced after trial. He pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of criminal sexual abuse, which carries a maximum sentence of three years in jail.
The victim was 16 when four incidents of sexual contact reportedly occurred in 2010. When Carbonaro was charged in Feb. 2011, he was placed on paid leave by Naperville Unit District 203. He was fired by the district Monday and can appeal within 17 days. He also was suspended from a part-time job as a summer camp coach and range officer for the Naperville Park District.
