In 2013, the Lombard Fire Department will celebrate its centennial celebration, and a special committee has been formed to plan events and activities surrounding the 100th anniversary.
The Centennial Celebration Committee is comprised of past and current members of the Lombard Fire Department, along with members of the Lombard Historical Society and staff from the Village of Lombard.
Beginning Jan. 3, 2013, the contents of a time capsule that was buried outside Fire Station 1 25 years ago will be revealed. Around this same time, a new time capsule will be hidden inside a wall in Fire Station 1.
The village has designed special vehicle stickers for 2013 that commemorate the fire department’s anniversary, and a horse-drawn wagon — a replicate of antique fire trucks — will march in the Lilac Parade in May.
“We plan to have active and retired members of the department walking alongside the wagon,” said Marty Coomes, battalion chief and chair of the Centennial Celebration Committee.
A picnic will be held in June for all current and past members of the department, and in the spring a commemorative book will be released that highlights historical information about the department.
