Senior John Hermes, 18, of Dixon, is Newman Central Catholic High School’s April Student of the Month. He is the son of Matt and Bernadette Hermes, 55, and 53, and his sisters are Suzanne Ravlin, 32, of Dixon; Kathleen Wright, 30, of St. Charles; Rebecca Hermes, 26, of Chicago; and Gretta Hermes, 21, a junior at the University of Illinois.
Favorite class: AP literature. It’s challenging, and I enjoy reading poetry.
Favorite poem: “Out, Out,” by Robert Frost
Top teacher: Dennis Black, AP literature, and Ann Propheter, calculus. I’ve had enjoyable conversations with Mrs. Propheter, and Mr. Black has great insight into what he teaches.
Extracurriculars: Golf, basketball, tennis, Envirothon, math club, B.L.I.N.D.
After graduation: I’ll attend the University of Illinois and study finance. I want to be a social entrepreneur.
Paycheck: I’m a pro shop assistant at Timber Creek Golf Course in Dixon. I love it. I get to be outside. I can go right from work to golfing.
Best friend: Mike Lee. He’s very easy to talk to.
