Mathematically Correct

Morris High captures first place at IVCC regional contest

OGLESBY, Ill. — The Morris Community High School mathletes won first place at the Division 2A Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics Regional Math Contest on Saturday, Feb. 25 at Illinois Valley Community College.

As a result, the entire team advanced to the state finals, to be held on Saturday, May 5, at the University of Illinois. Six teams also won first place: junior/senior 8-Person, Calculator, Pre-Calculus, Algebra II, Geometry, and Algebra I.

On the Algebra I team, Bridget Gile finished in first place, while Jessi Ding won third place. On the Geometry team, Trevor Lines, Kelly Kolotka and Luke Terhall all tied for first place. On the Algebra II team, Craig Claire placed first while Harmony Alford and Sean Phillips tied for second place. On the Pre-Calculus team, Joey Leasure won first place, and Paul Kolotka and Blake Wilhelmsen tied for second place.

The freshman/sophomore 2-person team of Adam Shay and Alex Cook placed second, as did the junior/senior 2-person team of Joey Leasure and Blake Wilhelmsen.

The Morris mathletes are coached by Mrs. Cindy Shannon, Mr. Craig Ortiz and Mrs. Samantha Shannon.

Also at the IVCC Division 2A Regional at IVCC, Reed-Custer High School finished in second place and Seneca High was fourth. RCHS earned first-place finishes in freshman/sophomore 8-person, junior/senior 8-person and junior/senior 2-person. SHS won the freshman/sophomore 2-person competition.

Division 4A

JOLIET — Members of the Minooka Community High School math team competed at the Division 4A ICTM regional competition on Saturday, Feb. 25 at Joliet Junior College.

Overall, the team earned a fifth-place finish. Three individuals qualified for the state mathematics competition on Saturday, May 5 at the University of Illinois.

The following MCHS students earned individual/small team place finishes (state qualifiers are also noted):

• Justin Miner, Algebra II — third place and state competition qualifier

• Rebecca Deluga, Luke Roberts, Marissa Seamon, Matt Wickersham, Matt Ziemann and Colin Armstrong, Pre-Calculus team — second place

• Luke Roberts, Pre-Calculus — third place and state competition qualifier

• Luke Roberts and Matt Wickersham, junior/senior 2-person — third place

• Luke Roberts and Matt Wickersham, Oral competition — second place and state competition qualifier

The MCHS math team is coached by MCHS mathematics teacher Ms. Jen Hanson.

Division IA

Dwight High School placed first overall among small schools at Illinois Valley Community College. It finished in first place in Algebra 1, Pre-Calculus and junior/senior 8-person.

At Lincoln-Way East High School, Gardner-South Wilmington High School placed fifth among 1A schools.
