ANTIOCH – A 25-year-old Elgin man likely drowned the evening of June 25 after jumping into Lake Marie.
While boating with family on the far east side of Lake Marie, Oscar Sanchez went in the water shortly after 6 p.m. June 25. When he began struggling, family members threw him a life jacket, but he was unable to reach it, Lake County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Christopher Thompson said.
Friends told police that Sanchez “could not swim,” Lake County Sheriff Office Lt. John Crilly said.
Members of the Lake County Sheriff’s Marine Unit were in the area at the time of the incident and responded to the scene, but the man already had disappeared under the water, police said. They called for assistance from fire-rescue departments throughout the area, including Spring Grove, Fox Lake and McHenry.
Using sonar, rescue crews found the man’s body about 10 p.m. June 25, Thompson said.
An autopsy is scheduled for Monday, June 27, but preliminary reports indicate he drowned, Lake County Coroner Artis Yancey said.
