FIRST TEAM – OFFENSE
Joe Camiliere, Kaneland, Sr., QB
Camiliere continued to click in his third varsity season in coach Tom Fedderly's spread scheme, completing 194 of 299 passes for 2,955 yards and 36 touchdowns against just five interceptions. The Northern Illinois Big 12 East Offensive MVP led the Knights in rushing, too, averaging 6.4 yards on 107 carries and scoring nine times.
Connor Quinn, Geneva, Sr., RB
Though his coach, Rob Wicinski, has contended Quinn might be a greater load as a linebacker, No. 39's 1,254 yards and 16 touchdowns build a strong case for his spot in the backfield. That Upstate Eight Conference River Division Offensive MVP nod is an endorsement, too.
Mike Brown, St. Charles East, Sr., RB
Brown's unconventional but successful path went something like this: Watch the 2009 season from the stands after deciding to pursue only track. Recommit to football in your senior summer. Build up stamina. Rush for 1,120 yards and 10 touchdowns on 229 carries. Finish second to Quinn in the UEC River Offensive MVP voting.
Quinn Buschbacher, Kaneland, Jr., WR
The first of several two-way Knights on the team, Buschbacher doubled as a defensive back when he wasn't igniting an offense that scored 493 points en route to a berth in the Class 5A semifinals. He led the team in receptions (56) yards (848) and touchdowns (10) and also had three scores on the ground.
Josh Mikes, St. Charles North, Sr., WR
Very little slowed Mikes from the start, as he soon emerged as a big-play target for North quarterback Matt Shiltz, grabbing 29 passes for a school-record 732 yards and nine touchdowns.
Tyler Callaghan, Kaneland, Sr., TE
"Callie" provided arguably the biggest catch of the Knights' 12-1 season, a 10-yard touchdown from Camiliere with nine seconds to play that put Kaneland ahead for good in its quarterfinal win at Vernon Hills. He had 34 receptions for 406 yards and five scores in all.
Graham Glasgow, Marmion, Sr., OL
Left tackle is a visible position as it is, but the 6-foot-7, 295-pound Glasgow often treated all the eyes watching him to a show. Flanking his younger brother, left guard Ryan, Graham Glasgow overmatched opponents and earned Suburban Christian Conference Blue Lineman of the Year.
Jake Winkel, Marmion, Sr., OL
The other bookend of the Cadets' burly and bright O-line, Winkel played a solid right tackle while helping Marmion's deep corps of running backs amass 3,653 yards on the ground.
Sean Tews, Batavia, Sr., OL
Batavia returned to the playoffs and rebuilt a traditionally balanced offense behind Tews' play at center. The second-year starter sprouted a mohawk for the stretch run, which included a 50-0 rout of Streamwood to become playoff eligible on the last day of the regular season.
Jake Mills, Geneva, Jr., OL
Geneva reeled off eight successive victories after an 0-2 start in large part due to a jelling offensive front five. Mills was the only returning full-time starter up front from 2009, and by the end of 2010 helped the Vikings tally a school-record 69 points in consecutive weeks.
Sam Komel, Kaneland, Sr., OL
Komel played predominantly on special teams last season before a strong summer propelled him up the depth chart. As he settled in at left guard, a position group that loomed as a question mark for the Knights in preseason became a notable strength.
FIRST TEAM – DEFENSE
Jimmy Boyle, Kaneland, Sr., DL
Coaches kept Boyle solely on the defensive front this season to maximize his effectiveness in harassing opposing quarterbacks and ballcarriers. The nose tackle was an All-NI Big 12 East pick for a unit that allowed just 150 points in 13 games.
Blake Serpa, Kaneland, Sr., DL
The NI Big 12 East Defensive MVP demonstrated determination from the start, and a motor that was all but unmatched. Serpa scored 20 touchdowns in his final high school season, but heads to Central Michigan as a defensive prospect with 10 sacks, eight tackles for loss and three blocked kicks.
Nick Scoliere, Marmion, Sr., DL
Before halftime of the Cadets' Week 2 win at Mundelein, Scoliere had last lined up at defensive end in third grade. An injury to teammate Nate Pacer forced a shift from free safety, and Scoliere wound up with 73 tackles, 16 sacks and nine hurries.
T.J. Lally, Marmion, Sr., LB
The Kane County Chronicle's Player of the Year collected 18 tackles against Rockford Boylan on Saturday to establish a new 6A state title game record. He recorded 148 stops and six sacks in his final season.
Joe Hoscheit, St. Charles East, So., LB
Saints coach Mike Fields said Hoscheit "really never came off the field for us" as a fullback-linebacker. Hoscheit earned an all-conference nod as a sophomore, and his 57 tackles included a 14-tackle outing at Larkin in Week 4.
Taylor Andrews, Kaneland, Sr., LB
Slowed by an ankle ailment during the Knights' semifinal loss to eventual state champion Montini, Andrews started the team's playoff run in style, notching two first-quarter sacks in an opening-round rout of King.
Sam Miller, Aurora Christian, Sr., LB
Aurora Christian encountered a glut of run-first, Wing-T offenses in its run to the 3A quarterfinals. Miller (111 tackles, 2.5 sacks, one interception) stood his ground and was there to stop them.
Ben Fornek, Batavia, Sr., DB
His 32 tackles, 12 passes defended and three interceptions keyed strong play from the secondary. Fornek also was a staple of Batavia's "Wild Dog" formation that featured No. 28 plunging ahead for an average of 4.3 yards per carry.
Kyle Davidson, Kaneland, Sr., DB
The senior member of a young secondary, Davidson showed the ropes to a group that included a sophomore and two juniors. He opened the season strong by notching an interception and catching a touchdown pass against Burlington Central.
Jake Bergren, St. Charles North, DB
North's quarterback from a season ago helped spearhead the 'D' after returning from two broken fingers he suffered at the end of summer baseball. Bergren often played a defensive back-linebacker hybrid and picked up run support and pass coverage smoothly.
Doug Berthold, Geneva, Sr., DB
Berthold developed into the Vikings' top cover corner when he wasn't playing wideout or returning punts or kicks for scores. He made 25 tackles out of the secondary and notched an interception.
SPECIAL TEAMS
A.J. Friedman, Marmion, Sr., K/P
The lefty nailed 8 of 12 field goal attempts – converting a long of 47 yards – and was good on 49 of 55 extra points. Friedman also averaged 35.4 yards on 50 punts.
