Walmart armed robbery
defendant pleads guilty

SYCAMORE – One of the men accused of taking part in a 2008 robbery of the DeKalb Walmart pleaded guilty Thursday to his role in the crime.

Jason Alejos, 26, of Chicago, pleaded guilty Thursday morning to armed robbery, according to First Assistant State's Attorney Bill Engerman. Circuit Judge Robbin Stuckert approved the deal for Alejos' plea and sentence, which was reached by counsel for the defense and prosecution.

"It's a mandatory prison sentence, with the minimum being six years in prison and the maximum being 30 years in prison," Engerman said.

In addition to his agreed-upon sentence of 11 years in state prison, Alejos also was ordered to pay back $30,000 in restitution. Engerman said he will have five years from the date of his release from prison to pay back the money.

His sentence is effective immediately, Engerman said. He was remanded to the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office with orders to transport him to the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Authorities said Alejos was one of four people involved in the robbery. Police said Robert L. Storball entered the Walmart at 2300 Sycamore Road in DeKalb about 1:45 a.m. Sept. 9, 2008, and went with a handgun to an office inside the store. Storball threatened the employee with the gun but did not injure anyone, DeKalb Police Lt. Gary Spangler said when the robbery occurred.

Storball took $118,268.94 and ran out the door, according to court documents. Storball then got into a vehicle waiting in the parking lot that was occupied by Alejos, Richard E. Rogers of Chicago and Doraelia Romero, 31, of Plano.

All four have been arrested; Storball is next due in court in February for his part in the crime. The Daily Chronicle could not confirm Thursday where in the legal process Rogers and Romero are at.
