Joliet driver accused of driving damaged vehicle, erratic behavior toward officer

A damaged vehicle seen on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at the intersection of Henderson Avenue and Jackson Street in Joliet.

A Joliet man was arrested after he was accused of driving a vehicle without a front bumper, refusing to pull over in a traffic stop and refusing to exit the vehicle.

At 10:46 a.m. Thursday, an officer saw a Chevrolet Cruze exiting a gas station in the 700 block of Cass Street without a front bumper and without displaying front or rear registration plates, according to a statement from Joliet Police Sgt. Dwayne English.

The officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the vehicle but it continued north on Henderson Avenue and approaching Jackson Street, English said.

Luis Aguilar, 19, was identified as a the driver of the vehicle.

Aguilar engaged in “erratic behavior, including making obscene gestures toward the officer and failing to comply with commands,” English said.

Aguilar was not wearing a seatbelt when he leaned out of the driver’s window while the vehicle was still in motion and allowed the vehicle to drift toward active traffic on Jackson Street, English said.

Despite multiple commands, Aguilar refused to exit the vehicle, English said.

An officer then broke a window and Aguilar was removed from the vehicle and taken into custody following a brief struggle, English said.

Officers found marijuana inside the vehicle, English said.

Based on Aguilar’s statements and behavior at the scene, he was taken by the Joliet Fire Department to Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet for evaluation, English said.

Aguilar was later released and taken to the Joliet Police Department

Aguilar was charged with resisting and obstructing a police officer, English said.

He was also issued citations for reckless driving, improper display of registration, no seatbelt, unlawful possession of marijuana by a driver and several other traffic offenses.

Aguilar was released from police custody and given a notice to appear in court.
