Sauk Valley grad Tony Tompkins named an NACDA Athletic Director of the Year

Sauk Valley Community College graduate and former Rock Falls boys basketball assistant coach Tony Tompkins was recently recognized by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. Tompkins, the athletic director at Johnson County Community College, was named a recipient of the NACDA’s Athletic Director of the Year award.

Tompkins is one of four award recipients this year from Junior/Community College institutions. In all, only 28 recipients were honored from more than a thousand institutions across NCAA, NAIA, junior college and community college classifications.

He will be recognized in conjunction with NACDA’s 61st Annual Convention at Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas on Tuesday, June 9.

“To be recognized by NACDA and honored alongside so many outstanding athletic directors from across the country is truly special,” he said. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to represent Johnson County Community College and the incredible work our coaches, staff and student-athletes do every day.”

The award recognizes athletics directors who have shown administrative excellence over the course of the last year through their commitment and positive contributions to student-athletes, campuses and the surrounding communities.

Tompkins has served as JCCC’s AD since 2022. The college is located in Overland Park, Kan. He resides in Kansas City with his wife, Heidi. They have three kids, Brooke, Haley and Samuel.

Over his tenure, JCCC athletic teams have produced one national championship, three national runner-up finishes, nine top-5 finishes, 20 national tournament berths, 18 Region 6 titles, 17 conference championships and 25 of the possible 26 teams to date over his term have ended the year ranked in the final NJCAA Poll.

Individually under his leadership, JCCC teams have produced 31 NJCAA All-Americans, two national players of the year, three national coaches of the year, 145 All-Region 6 selections, 180 All-KJCCC performers, 13 conference coaches of the year, 26 NJCAA Performers of the Week and 240 KJCCC Performers of the Week awards.

Tompkins also previously served as athletic director at Kansas City Community College.

He played basketball at Sauk Valley, where he earned an associate degree in Arts degree in 1996. He was an assistant coach for the Rockets boys basketball team when it won state in 1999. Tompkins was a standout athlete at Ohio High School.

He finished his undergraduate work at Missouri Baptist University in St. Louis, graduating with a BS in Secondary Education with a special emphasis in History. He received teacher certification the following year and holds a Masters Degree in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix in 2003.

He was an assistant women’s basketball coach and head men’s coach at Missouri Baptist University and was head men’s coach at Judson University. During his four years as head coach at Judson, Tompkins also served as interim athletic director and assistant athletic director.
