The familiar jingle of coins in your pocket may soon sound a little different as the production of the U.S. penny has now ceased.
Now is the time to pause and appreciate one of America’s most enduring coins. First minted in 1793, the penny has long been a symbol of thrift, luck and everyday life. Generations have grown up saving them in jars, tossing them into wishing wells, and learning the value of money one cent at a time.
To celebrate this small but meaningful piece of history, take part in a series of lighthearted activities at the Flagg Township Museum on Sunday, April 12, from 1-4 p.m.
Find your birth year penny: Search through our pile of pennies. Find a penny minted in your birth year and attach it to a memory card. Reflect on where that coin may have traveled and the stories it could tell. Write a “Penny Poem” or “Ode to the Penny”.
Get creative by writing a short poem inspired by the penny or the many phrases that include the penny. “A penny saved is a penny earned” is one of many. Reflect on its history, symbolism, or your own memories. Share your poem with the museum or friends and family to spread appreciation for this small but mighty coin.
Enjoy penny candy: Pair your discovery with a nostalgic treat— penny candy. Once sold for just a cent each, these classic sweets offer a taste of simpler times and a way to connect generations.
“These activities are a reminder that even the smallest things can hold great value,” Museum Director Jan Devore said. “The penny represents history, connection, and the everyday moments that shape our lives.”
Whether you’re a lifelong coin collector, a history enthusiast, or simply looking for a fun and meaningful activity, this celebration invites everyone to explore the stories — and sweetness — behind the penny.
