Ogle County Health Department offers COVID-19 boosters

Ogle County Health Department is offering COVID-19 vaccine booster shots by appointment only in the Rochelle and Oregon offices to anyone who meets the following recommendations.

Pfizer-BioNTech

You must have received Pfizer originally and you must be at, or past, the six-month mark from receiving your second dose.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends:

  • People 65 and older, and residents in long-term care settings should receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least six months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series.
  • People aged 50 to 64 with underlying medical conditions should receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least six months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series.
  • People aged 18-49 with underlying medical conditions may receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least six months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series, based on their individual benefits and risks.
  • People aged 18-64 who are at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure and transmission because of occupational or institutional setting may receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least six months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series based on their individual benefits and risks.

Moderna

A single COVID-19 vaccine booster dose is recommended greater than or equal to six months after completion of an mRNA primary series in the same risk groups for whom the CDC recommended a booster of Pfizer-BioNTech under Food and Drug Administration’s emergency use authorization. The Moderna booster dose is a smaller 50 microgram dose.

The CDC recommends the following groups should receive boosters:

  • People 65 and older and residents in long-term care settings should receive a 50-mcg booster shot of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine at least six months after their Moderna primary series.
  • People aged 50 to 64 with underlying medical conditions should receive a 50-mcg booster shot of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine at least six months after their primary series.

Additionally, the CDC recommends the following groups may be considered for boosters:

  • People aged 18 to 49 with underlying medical conditions may receive a 50-mcg booster shot of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine at least six months after their Moderna primary series based on their individual benefits and risks.
  • People aged 18 to 64 who are at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure and transmission because of occupational or institutional setting may receive a 50-mcg booster shot of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine at least six months after their Moderna primary series based on their individual benefits and risks.

Janssen (Johnson & Johnson)

A single COVID-19 vaccine booster dose is recommended for persons 18 and older at least two months after receipt of the initial Janssen dose, under the FDA’s emergency use authorization.

  • KSB Hospital and clinics;
  • Rochelle Pharmacy;
  • Snyders Pharmacy in Byron and Oregon;
  • Walmart in Rochelle;
  • Walgreens in Rochelle.

The Ogle County Health Department also is accepting appointments for the flu vaccine. This can be given at the same time as a COVID-19 booster. Both the regular dose of flu vaccine and the high dose (for those 65 and older) is available.
