Bodies of 2 missing men found near Johnsburg

More than a dozen departments made up of fire, police and county officials conducted a search for two missing men near Pistakee Lake Sunday, March 6, 2022.

The bodies of two missing men were found Sunday afternoon in Pistakee Lake near Johnsburg, the McHenry Township Fire Protection District said.

The Will County Sheriff’s Office notified the McHenry Township Fire Protection District about 6 a.m. Sunday that the men had been reported missing by family members, according to a news release from the fire district. Oak Park Lounge, 801 W. Oak Grove Road in Johnsburg, was reported as a last known location of the men.

Crews responded to the Oak Park Lounge and found a vehicle registered to one of the missing men, according to the release. Because of the vehicle’s proximity to the Pistakee Lake, a shoreline search was started.

Based on information gathered at the scene, a Mutual Aid Box Alarm System sonar team response was requested to aid in the open water search, the fire district said.

About 3 p.m., the bodies of the two men were found in open water near Coon Island, according to the release. Their bodies were recovered and turned over to the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.

Fire departments assisting in the search and recovery included McHenry Township, Wonder Lake, Algonquin, Nunda Rural, Crystal Lake, Barrington, Fox Lake, Countryside, Lake Forest, Libertyville, Lincolnshire, Buffalo Grove, Gurnee, and Wauconda. The Johnsburg Police Department and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office also assisted.
