Crystal Lake woman, Chicago man charged in fatal drug overdose

Pair accused of delivering heroin to a man who later overdosed

A Chicago man and Crystal Lake woman were charged Thursday in connection with another man’s overdose death.

Sheila Kavanaugh, 44, and Pablo Nieves, 58, each is charged in McHenry County court with drug-induced homicide. The offense is a Class X felony typically punishable by six to 30 years in prison.

Kavanaugh, of the zero to 100 block of North Williams Street, Crystal Lake, and Nieves, of the 1800 block of North St. Louis Avenue, Chicago, are accused of delivering heroin to another man, Matthew Moore, on Dec. 4. Moore later fatally overdosed on the same heroin, according to court records. Further details about his identity were not immediately available.

Nieves is accused of riding a train from Chicago to Crystal Lake to deliver the drugs, court records show.

Both he and Kavanaugh face additional charges of possession of a controlled substance in separate and ongoing McHenry County cases.

Kavanaugh and Nieves remained at the McHenry County Jail Friday evening on $240,000 and $250,000 bonds, respectively. Each is due back in court Wednesday morning.
