Crystal Lake man accused of producing child pornography

Charges carry six- to 30-year prison sentences if convicted

A 40-year-old Crystal Lake man is accused of creating child pornography involving a child he knew.

Courtney T. Stephens, of the 800 block of Eleston Drive, Crystal Lake, is charged in a 25-count indictment with aggravated criminal sexual assault, production of child pornography and possession of child pornography.

Aggravated criminal sexual assault and production of child pornography each carries a six- to 30-year prison penalty If convicted of aggravated criminal sexual assault, Stephens would be required to serve consecutive or separate sentences and complete at least 85% of his prison term, records show.

Stephens was arrested Dec. 16 after allegedly sexually assaulting an underage girl and including the minor in sexually explicit photos or videos, court records show. The allegations spanned from December 2019 to April 2020.

Stephens remained at the McHenry County Jail on Friday on a $300,000 bond. If he were to post the $30,000 bail required to secure his release, Stephens would be barred from having any unsupervised contact with minors, according to an order filed Friday. He also would be required to wear a GPS monitoring device and undergo a sex offender evaluation within 30 days of his release, records show.

Stephens is due back in court Feb. 19.
