3 Reasons Radon Mitigation Is So Important

The La Salle County Health Department is encouraging residents to test the radon level in their home.

During the coronavirus pandemic, it’s become increasingly disturbing to realize that we really don’t know how this silent, invisible killer virus operates.   Wearing masks, social distancing, and taking other types of precautions are within our power and help decrease our chances of contracting the virus.   High radon levels in homes is another silent, invisible potential killer.   Fortunately, periodic testing and in-home radon mitigation systems have been proven to decrease harmful levels of the radioactive gas in our homes and to help keep us safe.   Here are 3 reasons why radon mitigation is so important:

1.   Radon is a colorless, odorless, naturally-occurring gas that seeps into homes from underground through crawl spaces, sump pumps, cracks in foundations, and other tiny crevices.   It is estimated to cause over 20,000 deaths each year from lung cancer.   Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, after smoking.

2.   The Environmental Protection Agency’s recommended action level for radon exposure is 4 pCi/L.   The only way to know your home’s radon level is to have it tested.   It is estimated that at least 1 in 5 homes in the U.S. has a radon level over the recommended limit.   Some scientific studies have shown that children may be more vulnerable to radon exposure due to their higher respiration rates and rapidly dividing cells.

3.   There are no immediate symptoms that family members may experience to alert them to the presence of radon.   Testing is literally the only way to know your home’s radon level.   It typically takes years of exposure before any noticeable problems are discovered.

When dealing with a carcinogen like radon, it is best to rely on a licensed professional to do the testing and mitigation.   Most mitigation projects take less than a day and cost no more than a typical home repair.   For more information, please contact:
