Lake County is inviting residents to expand their understanding of local government through the new America250 Independence Academy, a civic education program that highlights how the principles of the Declaration of Independence continue to shape county services today.
The seven-week program begins April 22 and will provide about 14 hours of instruction through a series of sessions held at government buildings and community locations throughout Lake County. Most sessions will be held on Wednesday afternoons from 1 to 3 p.m., and participants will visit several locations across the county as part of the program.
Through presentations, tours and discussions with county leaders and staff, participants will gain a behind-the-scenes look at how local government operates.
“Participating in the Independence Academy is a unique way for residents to learn how county government serves the community,” said Sandy Hart, Lake County Board Chair. “It’s an opportunity to see the work of our facilities, technology, systems and people that deliver the essential services we rely on.”
Each session will explore a different area of county government, with participants touring specific departments to learn how their work connects to the founding principles expressed in the Declaration of Independence.
“Building trust in government starts with helping people understand how decisions are made,” said Jessica Vealitzek, Lake County Forest Preserves President. “This academy offers a chance to see firsthand the work of Lake County’s civil and public servants, and the ways in which County services support our communities and reflect the democratic principles our country was founded on.”
The academy is limited to 25 participants who will be selected at random from qualified applicants. Participants are expected to attend all sessions. Residents who require accommodations to participate are encouraged to notify Lake County during the application process.
Selected participants will be notified no later than April 16, and additional qualified applicants may be placed on a waitlist if the academy reaches capacity. The program will conclude with a recognition of graduates on June 3.
The America250 Independence Academy is part of Lake County’s participation in the national commemoration of the U.S.’s 250th anniversary.
