Lake County Forest Preserves earns 2 statewide awards

Public communications, design work honored

The Lake County Forest Preserves’ Horizons magazine, Fall 2025 issue, earned top honors from IPRA and IAPD for excellence in public communications and design.

Two Illinois organizations dedicated to advancing parks and recreation recognized the Lake County Forest Preserves with awards for excellence in public communications and design.

The honors were announced by the Illinois Park and Recreation Association and the Illinois Association of Park Districts during the recent Soaring to New Heights Conference, the largest park and recreation conference in the nation.

The Forest Preserves received:

  • First place, brochure series, print for Horizons magazine, Fall 2025 issue
  • Second place, informational print communication for 2024 Preservation Foundation Annual Report

IPRA and IAPD recognize agencies that demonstrate high standards in communication, design and public engagement across Illinois. With roughly 450 park districts and 20 forest preserve and conservation districts statewide, competition for the awards is strong.

Judges praised Horizons magazine for its compelling design and storytelling, saying, “Your quarterly publications successfully bring readers to the Lake County Forest Preserves by simply picking them up. It is evident the publication design is well thought out.

“The content, photography and illustrations are successfully executed page after page in the Fall 2025 submission.”

Judges also recognized the Preservation Foundation Annual Report, highlighting the work of the Forest Preserves’ charitable partner. One judge said, “Great use of mixed media. A lot of important information shared, but still in a fun, enjoyable way.”

Others added, “Loved the use of original photography throughout the piece. Very well executed, thoughtful, and well-written piece. Design is gorgeous and flows really well.”

“These awards reflect a true team effort and the high quality of work happening across the Forest Preserves,” said Rebekah Snyder, director of community engagement and partnerships.
