High school sports roundup for Saturday, April 17: Alex Velazquez homers, notches win for Plano baseball in season opener against Yorkville Christian

BASEBALL

Plano 9, Yorkville Christian 1

Alex Velazquez hit a three-run homer and struck out five over four innings of one-run, one-hit ball, and the Reapers broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning to win their season opener Saturday in Plano. Nick Baltierrez was 2-for-4 with a run scored, Eric Perez was 2-for-3 and Emanuel Marin, Mason Accidentale and Ethan Cadena each scored two runs for Plano.

Brett Bridel doubled and scored Yorkville Christian’s only run.

Lincoln-Way West 6, Yorkville 3

The Foxes stranded runners at second and third with none out in the fifth before scoring three runs in the sixth, but couldn’t finish the comeback in the seventh.

Owen Ross doubled, drove in a run and scored a run, and struck out four on the mound, Cole Yearsley was 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored and Gavin Dobbels had a double for Yorkville (2-1).

SOFTBALL

Oswego East 11-15, West Chicago 1-10

Megan Leonard went 2-for-3 with a single, triple and two RBIs in the first game Saturday of Oswego East’s home opener. Winning pitcher Emma Salis allowed only one run and one walk. In the second game, Kailey Goetz went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs to lead the Wolves to a doubleheader sweep. Ava Hubble went 2-for-3 with two singles and two RBIs, and Hannah Ruby went 1 for 3 with a triple and 2 RBIs.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Geneseo d. Sandwich 25-15, 25-21

Sterling d. Sandwich 25-7, 25-12

Cailyn Brummel had nine assists, 12 digs and three kills, Claire Allen five kills and two blocks and Olive Tornga 10 digs and six service points for the day for the Indians (7-12).

Sophia Datoli had three kills and 10 digs and Hannah Zieman 10 digs, two kills and four service points for Sandwich.
