Record Newspapers Athlete of the Week: Katie Silva, Oswego East, softball, junior

Oswego East junior Katie Silva

Name: Katie Silva

School: Oswego East, junior

Sport: Softball

Why she was selected: Silva hit a tying home run in the seventh inning of Oswego East’s win over Ottawa, and went 3 for 4 with four runs scored and two RBIs in a win over West Aurora.

She was selected the Athlete of the Week in an online vote. Other nominees were Yorkville track and field’s Aiden Kolkmeyer, Oswego track and field’s Bo Breed and Sandwich softball’s Jillian Freemon.

Here is Silva’s interview with Sports Editor Joshua Welge.

You had a huge homer in Saturday’s win. What was that situation like and how thrilling was that moment for you?

Silva: Saturday was tough competition for sure, from start to end. That last inning going up to bat, I knew I had to just put the ball in play. At first I didn’t realize it was over but when I did, I was extremely happy for my team knowing we were put back in a position to win.

Your team is off to a 6-0 start. What’s been some of the keys to your success?

Silva: Some keys that my team and I have been able to use so far is just remembering that it’s We before me. And I feel like we’ve been very good at putting our team first, we’ve kept high energy in these tough situations and really just relied on each other to be there for one another.

How has your role on this team evolved from last year?

Silva: I’d say my role on the team from last year to this has definitely changed into a more vocal and all around role. Last year I was mainly an outfielder, and now I’ve been all around on the field, so I’m really just focusing on developing my skills where I’m currently needed and being vocal in letting my pitcher know I’m behind her.

Who is your funniest teammate?

Silva: I’d honestly say the funniest girl on our team would probably be Eve Cerny, she’s a huge light in our dugout and is always making light of tough situations.

Have you played other sports?

Silva: I played in a short season of volleyball in seventh grade but other than that I have not.

What do you love about softball?

Silva: I’d say my favorite thing about softball is the family created in our team. Between all the ups and downs of the game itself, the team is a constant presence and reminder to have fun and just knowing there’s 16 other girls with me this season, it’s just a reminder that not one of us is alone on the field.

If you could visit any place for a spring break where would it be?

Silva: Westport in County Mayo Ireland.

What’s a TV show you could watch over and over?

Silva: I could watch the show “Gilmore Girls” over and over again.

Favorite snack food?

Silva: My favorite snack would for sure be fruit salad or Carmel Rice Crisps.
